The Campus Carnival is a fun, interactive MRU event designed to introduce students to a variety of internal services and external community partners in an engaging and approachable way. Students visit different booths to learn about available supports and resources, and with each interaction, they receive a token that can later be exchanged for monetary-value prizes. This creates a playful incentive for participation while encouraging meaningful campus engagement.
Background
This project presented an opportunity to use information design principles to better understand student engagement at campus events. By creating a token-based tracking system, we were able to capture precise quantitative data on how many students interacted with each internal and external partner. These insights now support more informed event planning and guide future strategies to strengthen student–service engagement.
The Opportunity
This project focused on measuring student engagement through simple, playful interaction tools. By analyzing participation patterns captured through the Campus Carnival token system, I explored how incentives can generate meaningful data to improve event design, enhance resource visibility, and inform future student-engagement strategies.
My Area of Focus
“A simple token system designed to boost engagement and streamline event tracking.”
I began by reviewing previous token systems to understand what worked well and where improvements were needed. After meeting with the Student Experience team to clarify event goals, I defined the requirements for each participating MRU service and external sponsors, including branding, messaging, and token quantities. From there, I developed a colour-coded token system that distinguished partners, supported smoother event organization, and enabled clear, trackable data collection throughout the Campus Carnival.
Concept Development
I built a spreadsheet to organize each partner’s branding, colour assignments, token quantities, and print needs, ensuring consistent coordination and a smooth production process.
I designed custom tokens for each partner, aligning visuals with their identity and event needs. I prepared print-ready files with accurate sizing, clear readability, and consistent formatting, then coordinated production of all 27,800 printed pieces.

Results
Event Day: Campus Carnival, September 4th, 2025
The final token system created a clear, consistent way for partners to engage students and track participation throughout the event. Colour-coding and structured categories made booth activity easy to understand, while custom token designs supported strong branding and quick recognition.
How it improved the event
Boosted student participation and booth visits
Made engagement tracking faster and more accurate
Reduced confusion with clear categories + colours
Strengthened partner visibility through custom designs
Supported smooth distribution and prize flow
